VSB Cell Phone Policy: What You Need to Know

The Vancouver School Board (VSB) has recently updated its Administrative Procedure 350, introducing new policies regarding the use of personal digital devices in schools. These changes aim to minimize distractions during instructional time and promote a focused learning environment. Here’s a breakdown of what parents and students need to know:

Policy Overview

Secondary Schools:

Devices must be turned off or placed on silent mode before entering the classroom and during instructional time.

Usage during class time is only permitted with explicit permission from the educator.

Elementary Schools:

Devices are restricted for the entire instructional day, including class time, recess, and lunch (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM).
Devices must be turned off or placed on silent mode and kept out of sight during school hours.

Permitted Use of Devices:

Personal devices may be used under the following circumstances:

  • Educational Purposes: When directed by an educator within the classroom.
  • Health and Medical Needs: As specified in an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Student Safety Plan.
  • Special or Diverse Educational Needs: Including the use of assistive technology related to IEPs or Student Support Plans.

Policy Enforcement:

Students are expected to adhere to the personal digital device policy and their school’s guidelines.
Repeated violations may result in the student’s device being stored with an administrator for the remainder of the day. The VSB is not responsible for the loss, damage, or disappearance of personal digital devices brought to school by students.

Important Considerations for Parents
While the new policy provides clear guidelines, parents may want to consider the following:

  • Communication: Discuss the importance of following the school’s policy with your child to avoid potential conflicts or the confiscation of their device.
  • Health and Safety Plans: If your child relies on their device for medical reasons, ensure that their IEP or Student Safety Plan is up to date and reflects these needs.
  • Monitoring Compliance: Stay informed about how your child’s school is enforcing this policy and any feedback your child may have about its impact on their daily routine.

These changes are intended to enhance the learning environment for all students, and by working together, parents, educators, and students can ensure a smooth transition to these new guidelines.

Vancouver DPAC conducted a parent survey concerning the new policy last school year.   We would like to hear from parents concerning any issues relating to the new VSB policies, and we encourage you to become a member of Vancouver DPAC and connect with our groups to share your thoughts.
