Presentation: Cathy McMillan from Dyslexia BC
“Navigating the New K-12 Literacy Supports”

Cathy McMillan will share her knowledge and practical experience with supporting parents and caregivers advocating for literacy supports for their children. She will explain the importance of early and consistent literacy screening, how literacy screeners are used, and how literacy screening is different from methods of diagnosis. She will highlight evidence-based interventions for struggling and dyslexic learners. Cathy will offer insights into what parents should look for, ask about, and expect when it comes to literacy support. The aim of this presentation is to help parents and caregivers better understand current resources and how to advocate for your child’s needs, whether your child is just beginning to read or facing ongoing challenges.

Cathy McMillan is a founding member of Dyslexia BC. A parent of two adult children with dyslexia, her advocacy began over twenty years ago when she realized both her children—and later herself—were dyslexic. Since then, Cathy has dedicated her time to improving literacy outcomes and ensuring that students with dyslexia in British Columbia are identified early and all individuals with dyslexia are supported effectively. Cathy collaborates with parents, educators, and policymakers to advance systemic change, focusing on early literacy screening, science informed evidence-based literacy instruction, and equitable access to early intervention, diagnosis and proper supports.
