Presenter: Dr. Anna Stokke, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Winnipeg
“Teaching Math: The Importance of Mastering Math Skills in Early Education Using Evidence-Based Pedagogy”
According to the VSB’s 2024-2025 Framework for Enhancing Student Learning report, being ‘on track’ in mathematics has dropped significantly since 2020 in both Grade 4 and 7 FSA results. Overall, only 60% of Grade 10 VSB students are assessed as being proficient in math.
Dr. Anna Stokke will share her knowledge and expertise on the teaching of math, with a particular focus on school-aged children. In her talk Dr. Stokke will highlight key numeracy skills that should be mastered by certain ages and the evidence-based pedagogy that best supports these goals. As Dr. Stokke often mentions in her popular math education podcast Chalk & Talk, mathematics is relentlessly hierarchical, meaning that foundational math skills must be mastered because subsequent mathematical concepts build directly upon earlier ones. As such, the mastery of key mathematics skills in early childhood education is incredibly important to later success in numeracy.
Dr. Stokke is a mathematics professor at the University of Winnipeg. She holds a PhD in Mathematics and is a recipient of a 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s most prestigious award for post-secondary teaching excellence and educational leadership. Anna co-founded and runs a non-profit after-school math program for kids in Winnipeg. She hosts the popular math education podcast Chalk & Talk.
